Supporting Women Affected by the Earthquake in Azaz and Afrin

The earthquake of February 6, 2023, came after years of displacement and suffering, leaving behind destruction and new displacement for countless families. Women were the most affected, as they not only lost their homes but also faced the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives amidst ongoing conflict and instability in the region. In response to this crisis, the project “Supporting Women Affected by the Earthquake in Northwest Syria” was launched in the Azaz and Afrin areas to address the urgent humanitarian needs of these women.

Project Importance:

This project, implemented between October and December 2023, focuses on providing essential support to 1,000 women directly affected by the earthquake, with the aim of indirectly benefiting an additional 5,000 community members. The project takes a comprehensive approach to relief by addressing immediate needs such as shelter, food, and medical care, while also focusing on long-term recovery through psychosocial support, vocational training, and community-building activities.

The earthquake left many women without the means to support themselves or their families. By providing targeted assistance, the project seeks to empower these women and help them regain a sense of stability and dignity.

Project Implementation:

The project aims to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of women affected by the earthquake, as well as enhance their resilience by focusing on psychological recovery and economic empowerment. It aims to foster a sense of belonging to the community and mutual support among women, helping to rebuild the social networks disrupted by the earthquake.

The project included 1,000 women from the Azaz and Afrin areas in rural Aleppo, from October 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023.

Activities included the distribution of dignity kits, improvement of reproductive health, and the alleviation of grief, loneliness, and loss through psychosocial support activities offered in safe spaces for women, especially those who lost loved ones. The project also provided earthquake-affected women with skills that would improve their knowledge and enable them to find jobs, either within NGOs or in the labor market independently by creating their own businesses, which would enhance their self-esteem and sense of value.

The organization Equity and Empowerment distributed 1,000 dignity kits to 1,000 women in both areas.

Additionally, the Shan network, affiliated with Equity and Empowerment, hosted earthquake-affected women in the homes of its members, contributing to building a sense of connection between the responders and beneficiaries.

“I don’t like receiving food in a bag because it makes me feel like I’m begging. I wish I could sit at the same table with the people distributing the food and we could all eat together, feeling like one family.”
