The research titled “Alternative Roles for the Political Participation of Syrian Women at the Local Level,” launched by the Equity and Empowerment Organization in collaboration with the Arab Reform Initiative and supported by the European Union, took place in Syria from December 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. This significant research effort aims to understand and enhance the political participation of Syrian women. The research directly involved 300 women and indirectly reflected the opinions of 4,200 others. The project sought to delve into the effectiveness and impact of Syrian women’s participation in politics and explore alternative forms of political engagement they have adopted.
The conflict in Syria has profoundly impacted all aspects of life, including the political landscape. Women, who constitute a large portion of the Syrian population, have been underrepresented in political entities and decision-making processes. Despite international efforts to promote gender equality, women’s political participation in Syria often remains symbolic rather than impactful. This project aims to address this gap by studying the barriers to meaningful participation and exploring how women navigate the political sphere at the local level.
The primary goal of the research is to analyze the current state of women’s representation in Syrian political entities and assess whether their participation is symbolic or truly influential. The study aimed to uncover the reasons behind the shift towards local-level activities, such as peacebuilding and conflict resolution, which have become prominent forms of political engagement for Syrian women.
To achieve these objectives, the research employed a multi-method approach, including social surveys, content analysis, and in-depth interviews. These methods were applied in various regions under different conditions, providing a comprehensive understanding of the diverse experiences and challenges faced by Syrian women in politics.
