In the context of the ongoing conflict in Syria and the challenging conditions in the northwest regions, women’s roles have undergone significant changes. Women have become active partners in productive work and, in some cases, the primary breadwinners for their families. Despite these significant shifts, women’s participation in decision-making remains largely limited, and their voices are often underrepresented in data collection and program planning processes.
This marginalization intensified after the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey in February 2023. Although women in northwest Syria were at the forefront of the humanitarian response, they continue to face significant obstacles that prevent them from taking on influential leadership roles in their communities. In response to this reality, the “Enhancing Women’s Participation in Decision-Making” project was launched in collaboration with Suriana as a necessary initiative to empower women to assume effective leadership roles.
Armanaz is one of the regions requiring concrete interventions to empower women to play a more significant role in decision-making. The situation in this area reflects the general state of affairs in northwest Syria, where, despite women’s active participation in economic and social activities, they continue to face social and cultural challenges that hinder their access to leadership positions. These challenges include deeply ingrained societal perceptions of women’s roles, as well as a lack of training and knowledge necessary to enhance their leadership capabilities.
The “Enhancing Women’s Participation in Decision-Making” project aims to strengthen women’s leadership capabilities and promote their active participation in community decision-making. The project focuses on providing essential knowledge and skills to women in Armanaz, alongside fostering social acceptance of their roles through community dialogue, research, and advocacy.
The project encompasses a series of activities aimed at enhancing the capacities of women’s groups and increasing their involvement in the community. Initially, 10 women’s groups in the Armanaz area will be identified to empower women. These groups will participate in orientation sessions on humanitarian leadership concepts and decision-making, as well as intensive training programs on communication skills, advocacy, using Microsoft Office, and decision-making. Additionally, the “Community Forum” will be established as a decision-making space with the participation of women, where ideas proposed by these groups will be presented and evaluated to produce a comprehensive research study.
The “Enhancing Women’s Participation in Decision-Making” project serves as a vital initiative to strengthen women’s roles in their communities by focusing on capacity building and changing societal perceptions. The project seeks to empower women to effectively participate in decision-making processes, contributing to the improvement of women’s status in particular and the community in general. Successful implementation of this project will enhance the leadership foundation for women in Armanaz and pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for women in northwest Syria.
