Peacebuilding from the Perspective of Syrian Women

In light of the ongoing conflict in Syria, which has stretched on for more than a decade, there is an urgent need to explore the role of women in peacebuilding. This paper is based on the premise that peace cannot be sustainable and inclusive unless women are actively and genuinely involved in all stages of the peace process. Syrian women, who have borne heavy burdens as a result of this conflict, possess unique perspectives and experiences on how to build peace and effect change in their communities.

This paper highlights the perspective of Syrian women in peacebuilding by analyzing the conflict from a women’s/gender perspective and examining the experiences and insights of women involved in the peace process. The paper delves into the complexity of the Syrian conflict, where politics intertwines with military issues, and religion with social dynamics, making it difficult to accurately describe the conflict. Nevertheless, focusing on the experiences of women allows for a deeper understanding of the humanitarian and social dimensions of the conflict and reveals the strengths and challenges women face in their efforts to achieve peace.

The paper also emphasizes the multiple roles women play in Syrian society, ranging from human rights activists and journalists to leaders in politics and civil society. These roles reflect the diversity and influence of women in their communities, despite the significant challenges they face.

Through this policy paper, a comprehensive vision is presented on how to harness women’s power in Syria to achieve sustainable peace. Women, with their unique perspectives and deep understanding of the social and political realities, are capable of offering innovative and effective solutions for peacebuilding that contribute to long-term stability in the region. The paper is based on real experiences and field observations of a group of Syrian women, giving it greater credibility and depth.

In conclusion, this paper envisions a future where Syrian women can lead efforts to rebuild their society, not only as recipients of peace but as creators of it as well. As this paper argues, peace in Syria is not merely the absence of war but an ongoing process that requires the participation of all segments of society, with women at the forefront.
