Alternative Forms of Syrian Women's Political Participation at the Local Level

This research explores alternative forms of Syrian women’s political participation at the local level, focusing on how Syrian women have engaged with political and social life amidst the significant changes Syria has witnessed since 2011.

Research Background:

The Syrian uprising of 2011 and the subsequent years of conflict have brought about fundamental changes in Syria’s social and political structure. These changes have created a space for women to reclaim roles in public and political life, as women participated in peaceful demonstrations and human rights activities. Despite the significant challenges they faced, such as violence and marginalization, women were able to find alternative forms of political and social engagement.

The research is based on the views of Syrian women impartially, without any influence from the Equity and Empowerment Organization, and it maintains the confidentiality of their data. The study aims to analyze the alternative forms of women’s participation in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, raising political awareness, economic empowerment, and countering extremism.

Through this research, the challenges that women face in political participation, whether economic, social, or cultural, are highlighted. The study also provides recommendations for civil society and international organizations to support this participation.
